In 2007 the Journalism Education Association created a national mentoring program with its goal of retaining new journalism teachers and curbing the adviser turnover rate in the field. Oregon was one of the first states to pilot the program and has had an active mentoring program ever since.
Former Milwaukie High School adviser Bill Flechtner has been involved in the mentoring program since its inception. Flechtner is a former Oregon Journalism Teacher of the Year and a JEA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Karen Boone, formerly of Summit High School, and Ray Hopfer, formerly of Tillamook High School are also current mentors in Oregon.
Teachers interested in becoming a “mentee” should contact Flechtner at email@example.com.
